Forensic Accounting

Adding a new program to the school of business is up for consideration.  The program would be Forensic Accounting.

“At this point, the school of business has approved the program [Forensic Accounting] which sends the proposed program to a university committee (Academic Affairs) for approval,” said Dr. Thomas Bell professor of business administration. “If this program is approved by Academic Affairs only then will it be available as a new business program.”

Forensic accounting, is accounting that is appropriate for legal review. Forensic accounting is the process of accumulating facts through techniques and measures to settle legal problems. Documents, finances and other data are taken into investigation in Forensic accounting according to edwardspub.com.

The proposed program will not just focus on the numbers but rather how the numbers were configured.

“The objective is to make sure that all of the numbers add up adequately,” Bell said. “Also this program would ensure that fraudulent activity is nonexistent”

The accounting program seems to grow larger each year said Hector Quintanilla, dean of the school of business .

“Since accounting is a very dynamic, demanding and growing field, classes such as forensic accounting are necessary,” said Quintanilla.

If the program is approved, it goes to the provost and then to the president for approval.

“The dean of the school of business could possibly plan for implementation in fall 2010, if forensic accounting is approved as proposed”, Bell said

New program in business -Project Management

New program

Adding a new program to the school of business is up for consideration.  The program would be Business Administration degree program, with a concentration in Project Management.

Project Management will prepare students for career opportunities in project management occupations including project scheduling, cost and risk management, quality assurance and project procurement, said Dr. Rodney Erakovich, assistant professor of management

“Similar descriptions of program curriculums by three major universities in this area are from the University of Texas at Arlington, University of North Texas and Texas Christian University and the workforce needs they fill. The curriculum proposal fills a gap in the regional educational offerings and is not in competition with the curriculums of regional major universities. It adds to the management education of the workforce by providing a focus on management rather than specialized tasks such as logistics, transportation and manufacturing control.”

Course  requirements for the proposed new program would be ACC 3340 Cost Accounting,MGT XXXX Project Life Cycle Management, MGT XXXX Earned Value Management, MGT XXXX Contract Management,MGT XXXX Operations and Supply Chain Management, MGT XXXX Project Performance and Quality Management  and MGT XXXX Project Management. (Xs represent the future course numbers)

“It is a long process filled with a considerable amount of research; it takes many step for this program to get started.” said Dr. Hector Quintanilla, dean of the school of business.

Erakovich said “The proposal to start a new concentration requires a lengthy approval process. The faculty in the School of Business has approved the concentration and is being considered by the Academic Affairs Committee. If they approve it goes to Provost and then President for approval. The Dean at SOBA plans implementation in fall 2010 if all is approved as submitted.”

E-Advising

E-Advising

Sophomore and junior business students will be the first to pilot the new e-advising program, at Texas Wesleyan this fall.

The E-Advising program will allow students to create an online course planning worksheet,  which will allow students to plan courses for the next two semesters. The worksheet can then be submitted to advisers eliminating paperwork. The course is then displayed for approval for the advisor in Ramlink, according to www.txwes.edu/titleiii/E-Advising.

said “About 60 other universities are currently using the E-Advising program,” said Patricia Quiñones, Advising Specialist. The program is also being launched with the school of education. Quiñones said, if the pilot is successful, “the idea is to have the entire campus using the program by 2012 or sooner”. “It is a good program and offers a good advantage to students and faculty.”

However, not all students are excited about the possible transition to e-learning. Cristin Thorne, junior business student said “I would rather meet with my advisor than use E-learning. I feel more comfortable with talking to someone who knows about all of the business classes and can give direct input”

Some professors are pleased with the idea of having an e-advising program. “E-learning is a useful tool to aid students in the planning process said Dr. Thomas Bell III, professor of business administration, however, students should still come and meet with their adviser to make sure the courses are being offered at the desired time. The tool just enhances the advising experience but does not replace it.”

“E-advising is still a pilot study, said Dr. Hector Quintanilla dean of the school of business. “We need to find out if it benefits the students first.”

“E-Advising complements our existing advising program and business processes through collaborative Web-based tools” said Meghan Foster, Title III Instructional Technologist.

AACSB

School of business and AACSB

School of business, working on becoming accredited by Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business or AACSB.

AACSB an international accreditation symbolizes the highest standard of accomplishment for business schools, worldwide. The main purpose is to show that the institution confirms their pledge to quality and continuous improvement through meticulous and comprehensive peer review. AACSB has a high standard of excellence in management education according to www.aacsb.edu.

“Only about 5 percent of all school of business hold the elite title,” said Dr. Hector Quintanilla, schools of business dean. Some surrounding schools already have their accreditation. “Schools like University of North Texas and University of Texas at Arlington are AACSB. We want Wesleyan to join this prestige level”.

Quintanilla said “AACSB would enhance the look of the school. The school would be on an international level. It would allow students from other countries to attend [Texas Wesleyan]. It would also allow them to transfer credit hours from their current school to Wesleyan”

“I think that this is a great opportunity for Texas Wesleyan’s school of business to take advantage of becoming accredited,” said Lauren Bell, senior business major. “As a soon- to-be graduate; I am very pleased with the education that I have received. I believe that Wesleyan is one of the finest institutions and getting accreditation will not be the basis of the high standards of business education for Wesleyan; instead it will show the high educational standards that Wesleyan has always held for their students prior to this accreditation process.”

New faculty faces –Business Building, Sullivan

New faculty faces –Business Building, Sullivan

While the Accounting department continues to grow, the faculty needed to grow to accommodate the students according to school of business dean, Dr. Hector Quintanilla. Quintanilla said “accounting is technical and very dynamic”

Dr. Carol Sullivan is one of the two new accounting professors hired.  Quintanilla said “there is a large demand in the accounting field.”

Originally from Houston, Sullivan received her bachelor’s degree in Business Communications and doctorate’s degree in accounting at Arizona State University

Sullivan was an accounting professor at Seattle University. Sullivan said “it is a private school just like Wesleyan but paying $40,000 a year will make you appreciate the fees at Wesleyan”.

Being a high school math teacher was the initial idea for Sullivan. Sullivan said “I like math a lot; I am good with numbers”. However, Sullivan’s high school coach gave her the idea to teach on a college level.

Before becoming a professor, Sullivan worked as an accountant, but she said she prefers being a professor. “You are able to extend your influence and you can do so much more to society being a professor”. Sullivan said “my favorite thing about teaching is the students and I like that the students keep you young”.

“I am enjoying the people at Wesleyan”, she said. “They are friendly, compassionate and the students are very intelligent.”

Bud Kennedy

I enjoyed hearing columnist Bud Kennedy speak in class on Monday. I feel he gave us some great tips for writing. Also, he presented some issues in writing a column that I had not thought about. I am glad that he told us that even though he is free to write whatever he wants, it is not as easy as one would think. He writes what the people want to read, not necessarily what he  wants to talk about. I am one who thought it must be wonderful to have the privilege to write about any topic you want. I realized when I had a choice to write about anything I wanted to in class, it was difficult. It was hard to narrow ideas down. Writing something that you think others would like to read and something that I would not mind writing, is a complicated task I realized.

Finally November!!

I am so happy that it is November. November is one of my favorite months because of Thanksgiving! It is the one time when I know the entire family will be together; when the family is all together we are ensured to have a wonderful time. Also, I enjoy that it is a short week for school because everyone is already in Thanksgiving mode. The best part is when we come back from the Thanksgiving break the semester is practically over. Everything is down hill from that; I am excited! We have 31 days until the end of the semester and 21 actually class days left; I am on the countdown! :)
